Livestock Information Ltd is a technology delivery partner owned 85% by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and 15% by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). The company was established in 2019 and forms part of Defra’s Livestock Information Transformation Programme (LITP), which is a Defra change programme set up to lead the transformation of livestock traceability in England and to improve the resilience of the industry against the impact of disease. Livestock Information Ltd’s role is to build and deliver new products and services using the latest technology to transform livestock data management and improve the quality of livestock movement data.
The current Livestock Information Service (LIS) for sheep was deployed in March 2022, replacing the old ARAMS traceability service for sheep, goat, and deer movements in England. It has provided a monumental step towards increasing digital movement reporting and enhancing data quality. Development is now well underway to launch the new LIS cattle service in Summer 2026, which will replace the Cattle Traceability Service (CTS). Pig movement data will then follow suite, to replace the current eAML2 service. Combining multiple livestock species onto one traceability system will create a single, digital movement service for all species that is simple and convenient for livestock record management in England. We also work with counterparts in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to create compatible and seamless services for livestock movements across UK borders.
Industry
The Livestock Information Service has been co-designed by the Traceability Design User Group (TDUG); an independent group of 25 industry, government and academic specialists from across the meat and livestock industry.
The Traceability Design User Group is currently chaired by John Cross and acts as a bridge between the service and industry to ensure it is built for, and remains to be fit for, industry requirements.
