Helping farmers to save time, reduce paperwork and maintain a compliant holding register, the Livestock Information Service (LIS) allows keepers to report sheep, goat and deer movements digitally. Developed in collaboration with farmers, government and industry stakeholders, LIS is a free tool which can help to accurately and efficiently report movements on and off a holding.
Digital reporting provides close-to-real-time data in a way that simply isn’t possible to capture when reporting movements via paper documents, primarily due to the additional time it takes for the forms to be received and processed.
A centralised and accurate data store is fundamental in helping to manage the spread of notifiable diseases and can help farmers, industry and government to effectively manage disease outbreaks. By knowing the location and movement history of an animal, Animal Health Inspectors can quickly isolate and manage incidents of disease, helping to minimise the impact of the outbreak.
Over 10,000 keepers across England have already signed up to LIS and benefit from secure, easily accessible records and movement records that are readily available to view and download when needed. LIS also provides keepers with an online holding register, which can be used instead of traditional paper books, helping to mitigate the risk of lost or damaged records.
In addition, Electronic ID (EID) tag readers can help to make the simple process of recording a movement on LIS even more streamlined, especially for keepers moving large numbers of animals. Using an EID reader allows sheep keepers to scan ear tags and upload tag ID data accurately and efficiently to LIS.
The Livestock Information Service currently supports sheep, goat and deer keepers in England to meet their legal reporting requirements, with plans to onboard cattle and pig data onto the service over the next few years. This transition will enhance the accuracy and availability of livestock traceability data for both government and industry, which is essential in increasing the resilience of the UK farming industry.
