When a sheep or goat dies on your holding, you must update your holding records within 36 hours of discovering the death. The information you record will need to include the date of the death and the animal’s official tag identification number.

The Livestock Information Service (LIS) can be used to easily record the death of a sheep or goat on your holding. Whilst the platform’s primary use is to facilitate online movement reporting, LIS has a range of useful additional features. When using LIS to record an animal’s death, the system will automatically update your holding register, helping to ensure legislative compliance whilst minimising paperwork.

To record the death of a sheep or goat on your holding, all you need to do is log in to your LIS account, select the relevant holding and species, and click on Deaths/Missing in the navigation bar at the top of the page. Here, you will be able to select the animal’s details and enter the date of the death. For full traceability, you can also record the location of where the carcass has been sent to. This step is optional, but whether you choose to complete it or not, please be mindful that you must safely and legally dispose of the animal by following the rules outlined on the gov.uk website. Once you have submitted the death report on LIS, you will be able to easily retrieve the report, and view the details as needed, within the Deaths section of the LIS online Holding Register.

In addition to recording a sheep or goat death, you can also use LIS to report animals that are missing from, or found on, your holding. This will ensure your headcount and holding register are updated and correct. Once you have logged into LIS and selected the holding where the animal is missing from, or has been found on, you can access this feature by clicking on Deaths/Missing in the navigation bar. You will be directed to a new page where you can select a tab called Missing & Found. Here you can enter the date when the animal was found, or went missing from your holding, as well as the animal’s identification details.

If you are reporting a sheep or goat that has gone missing from your holding, you can add the identification details by selecting the correct animal from a list of animals on your holding, or you can manually enter the animal’s tag number. If multiple animals with the same flock number have gone missing from your holding, there is also the option to batch add the details.

When reporting a sheep or goat that has been found on your holding, you can enter the details manually, or if there are multiple animals, you can batch add the details. Once you have completed all the steps and clicked submit, you will be able to view any found and missing animal summaries on your LIS holding register. You can click into each of these summaries to view the details associated with the report.

In addition to being a free, easy to use service enabling you to digitally report sheep, goat and deer movements, LIS provides a quick and efficient way to maintain a compliant and comprehensive holding register. Records are securely stored and can be accessed in just a few clicks, so are readily available to view and download as needed. Visit our Get Started page to sign up to LIS today and help to build a safer and more resilient future for UK farming.
